creating wearable art & design

using unconventional materials like 3D printing, fishing nets, and plexiglass, Hillary Sampliner creates art for the human body.

neptune’s revenge

old fishing nets sourced from a Louisiana commercial fishing operation transform into a work of wearable art. The nets used for this piece lived a life on the seas and tell the story through the salt stains and cast turquoise hues, the repaired knots and torn edges. The sculptural undulations were led by the materials rigid form and mesh structure. Originally used for heavy industry, never meant to be worn on human flesh, the net takes on a new life in the form of high fashion and return to the salty swamps of Louisiana in a new, fantastical form.

the shape of

water

for the body

sculpture

inspired by the movement of the ocean, Hillary Sampliner creates the ethereal piece entitled “the shape of water” by liquifying and sculpting a single piece of plexiglass into wearable art. Capturing a moment frozen in time, this piece engulfs the wearer in a liquid dream that appears to defy gravity and reality.

the process of melting, manipulating, and sculpting liquified plexiglass takes time and a vision for its final form.

Each sculpture is a mesmerizing piece of art, a one-of-a-kind creation capturing a fleeting moment of nature's grace. The ethereal beauty of flowing water is meticulously crafted using a heat gun to mold plexiglass into fluid, organic shapes that seem to dance with life. This intricate process demands weeks of dedication and artistic finesse, resulting in sculptures that exude a timeless elegance and creative sophistication.

POSEIDON

a wearable exoskeleton

Taking inspiration from biomimicry, this piece was produced using laser sintering technology in one single piece. The unique mesh structure resembles chainmail covered in scales. Each scale is shaped to resemble shark skin and designed to move individually on a hinge, providing the wearer with flexibility in movement despite the rigid material composition.

Poseidon was designed as part of a computational fashion masters at NYU in partnership with Eyebeam and Shapeways. First displayed at New York Fashion Week in 2014 the piece then made its way to Dutch Design Week and several other exhibitions around the globe.
